The Pines Resort... then and now

The Pines Resort at Bass Lake

The Pines Resort is the centerpiece of Bass Lake Village, a mountain community that grew up on the banks of a man-made lake originally called the Crane Valley Reservoir. The name was eventually changed when a small lumber operation polluted the lake and the fish that swam in it. In addition to being fined, the lumber company was ordered by the government to replace all the fish that were lost. The chosen fish was Bass, hence the new name - Bass Lake.

Now owned by Pacific Gas and Electric Company, the waters of Bass Lake, CA are used to generate electricity and for crop irrigation in the California's Central Valley as well as for recreational use. At an elevation of 3,400 feet, measuring approximately 4½ miles long and ½ mile wide at the widest point, Bass Lake is considered a "warm water" lake with water temperatures reaching 80 degrees in the summer months.

The Pines Resort of today dates back to 1977, when two business partners purchased a cluster of rustic cabins on the shores of Bass Lake, CA. They started renovations designed to transform the property into a full-service, year-round destination, and The Pines Resort was established.

The legendary resort has since welcomed generations of families, business travelers and leisure guests, but Bass Lake – and the lodging it inspired – were merely a mountainside meadow just a century ago.
