Winter 2006 Trivia….

The first issue in January 1949 of Bass Lake’s short-lived Fish Line newspaper tells of these things.

“Fun For All On The Ice of Bass Lake” was the lead story of the day. As zero or near zero temperatures continued at the lake, ice some five to six inches thick spread over five acres of the lake’s surface in the vicinity of the old Falls Resort. Subsequent stories in February tell of continued ice with some people skating across the lake in spots or from The Falls to The Pines.

“Local residents enjoyed the unusual pastime for several days prior to the weekend of Jan. 16 with huge bonfires to warm the skaters and others here to join in the community fun,” reported the paper.

“Word traveled to the flatlands and the weekend brought an estimated 1,000 visitors to play in the snow and enjoy the ice skating.”

A featured skater was Joyce Williams Kimbro, who back in 1934 had won national skating honors and also was the Queen of the San Joaquin Valley Winter Sports Carnival held that year in Yosemite National Park.

Spotlights from Claude Williams, The Falls Resort and Harvey’s Airport Service’s flares marked the extent of the safe ice.

Of course, both The Falls and the Bass Lake Airport are long gone. So are penny postcards and first class mail for 3 cents…….
